WHAT IS MEDICARE?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program that is designed for people at least 65 years old. Medicare consists of three parts that each cover specific types of services.
Medicare Part A
This hospital insurance covers stays in the hospital, skilled nursing facility stays, hospice care, and in some cases, home health care.
Medicare Part B
Part B is the medical insurance coverage portion of Medicare. It covers some doctors' services, medical supplies, outpatient care, and preventative care services.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Medicare enrollees have two options, as far as how they receive coverage. The enrollee must select one.
Original Medicare
Original Medicare covers much of the cost of the medical services it covers, but not all of it. Original Medicare plans include Part and Part B, with enrollees paying for services as they get them. Enrollees typically pay 20% of the costs on top of a yearly deductible. A separate plan can be added for prescription drugs.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare that offers "all-in-one" coverage. Medicare Advantage plans usually include Part D, along with other added benefits not included in
Original Medicare.
WHAT ABOUT MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT INSURANCE?
Also known as Medigap, Medicare Supplement Insurance is additional coverage sold by private companies that can be used to cover "gaps" left by Original Medicare. This form of insurance may be used to cover costs like coinsurance, copayments, or your deductible.
